surface maps

In this work, Susan Snipes explores acceptance of the aging human skin alongside the protective barrier of tree’s outer skin–their bark.

About the Works

This work pursues acceptance of the imperfections and impermanence of the human body. I created a large-scale low relief map of the age spots (solar lentigines) and scars on my upper arm to use as a frottage plate and the foundation of this painting's texture.
The cyanotype process uses ultraviolet (UV) light to produce a deep prussian blue. Sun spots are caused by overactive pigment cells and are prone to occur on skin frequently exposed to the UV light of the sun.
