life with kids during COVID-19

These paintings are about life at home with young kids during the Coronavirus era. The base layer of these pieces is a colorful swirl of india ink, professional-grade crayons and paint marker. My daughters and I sat at the kitchen table and marked up the first layer. Then, in subsequent sessions, I covered the brilliant colorful patterns with a murky and dark invasion of opaque oil and cold wax. These pieces capture some of the moments and feelings of life at home during COVID-19.

Follow the leader

On rainy days, or when I needed some variety, we played follow the leader. I walked up and down our flights of stairs, in and out of rooms, and around tables and chairs. Then each of my daughters took their turn to be the leader.

Sometimes I needed some time alone, or a change of pace. I knew the rest of my family did, too.

Blossoming in the dark

We’ve spent (and are spending) many months at home, but childhood doesn’t stop. My daughters continue to grow and learn. Even if very little of the rest of the world witnesses their growth.

Jumbled

We were all jumbled at one time or another. A messy house, a tangle of clothes, a pile of dishes, overlapping Zoom calls, and a crazy jumble of life.

The rich, vibrant, busy underpainting on this piece is more evident here. It was hard to cover up the lovely accidents of colors and mixed media. But it was life. And some of that vibrancy had to be covered.

Jumping in place

Sometimes, my daughters visit me in my studio (in the basement of our house). I usually have music playing, and I can often entice them into a quick dance party. Our dancing is mostly a lot of erratic jumping.
